Does a harness make my dog pull?
We've got the answer!
Many people think that harnesses cause dogs to pull because they make your dog more comfortable. Physical discomfort is only one way of challenging a negative behaviour in your dog, and positive reinforcement (a method whereby you use treats, praise, toys, or anything your dog finds rewarding to reward desired behaviours) is always more effective as a way of changing behaviour.
The root cause of all pulling in dogs is usually lack of effective lead training, and behavioural or emotional issues. For example, your dog might be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, excited, or frustrated in a situation or environment, which might cause them to pull. Additionally, there is a natural tendency in mammals to resist pressure. This means the assumption that harnesses cause pulling is an example of correlation not causation; harnesses do not cause pulling, they simply make it less uncomfortable, which is not the same as encouraging a behaviour.
Many people also draw associations between harnesses and pulling because some canine sports require harnesses, such as sled dogs. Here, it is important to remember that there are different types of harnesses required for different activities with your dog, meaning that the type of harness most people use for their daily dog walks is not the same as the type of harness used for pulling sports. Dogs can identify that different gear is used for different activities and different situations.
So, now we’ve busted some myths.....
what are the 4 key reasons why you should use a harness when walking your dog?
1 - Harnesses can actually help reduce pulling
Harnesses provide a secure fit, dispersing the force of a dog’s pull across their neck and shoulders as opposed to just across their neck, which can cause choking. Dogs might be less likely to pull as a result because they are in less discomfort and are therefore less likely to try and pull away to escape this.
2 - Harnesses are safer for you and your dog
A comfortable dog is less likely to pull, and reducing pulling can help reduce aggressive behaviour in your dog. This is because when you constantly pull your dog back at every corner, you are encouraging your dog to perceive everything as a threat, meaning they could become reactive. This can also be dangerous in situations where you need to be in control of your dog, such as a time when you encounter another reactive dog.
3 - Harnesses can promote a positive bond between you and your dog
It can make walk times less stressful since your dog is experiencing less discomfort, encouraging a positive and healthy relationship with your dog. However, it is important to make sure that the correct size, style, and fit is chosen for your dog, as some dogs might find certain harnesses uncomfortable or restrictive. If you are unsure, please get in contact with us as via email or phone, as we are more than happy to offer advice on the most suitable size and style for your dog.
4 - Harnesses are better for your dog’s health.
When a dog pulls on the lead whilst wearing a collar, this can cause serious health problems as it can put pressure on the dog’s neck or spine. This can exacerbate breathing problems in brachycephalic breeds, causing discomfort or even pain and making walks uncomfortable for both you and your dog.
In Conclusion
Consistent training is the only way to ensure your dog does not pull. No-pull harnesses and other non-pull equipment should not be used in the place of consistent and effective training. Instead, they should be used alongside effective training methods to encourage good behaviour, discourage pulling, and ensure your dog stays happy and healthy!
