Training your dog to "stay or wait" is one of the most useful commands you can teach them. Whether you’re keeping them safe at a busy park or preventing them from dashing out the door, a solid “wait” can be a lifesaver! Here are some simple and fun tips to help you train your dog. 

1. The Basics

Firstly, choose you're command, is it going to be "Stay" or "Wait"?
Begin in a quiet, distraction free area. Ask your dog to sit or lie down. Then, with a treat in hand, give a clear and firm command: “Stay.”

2. Try a hand signal

Dogs respond well to visual cues! Try holding your palm up like a “stop” sign when you say “Stay.” This helps reinforce the command.

3. Short & Sweet Sessions

Start with just a few seconds. Reward them with praise and a treat for staying in place. Gradually increase the duration as they improve.

4. Step Back Slowly

Once your dog stays for a few seconds, take a small step back. If they stay, reward them! If they move, simply reset and try again. Increase the distance over time.

5. Practice in Different Places

Once your pup gets the hang of it at home, practice in different environments like the garden or a park. This helps them learn to “stay” even with distractions.
