Why Do Dogs Do That?
10 Common Dog Behaviours Explained
If you've ever caught your dog spinning in circles, digging up your flowerbed, or barking at thin air, you're not alone. Dogs have many quirky habits that can be confusing or amusing, but there's almost always a reason behind their behaviour.
In this guide, we'll explore 10 common dog behaviours and what they mean, helping you better understand your furry friend and strengthen your bond.
1. Tail Chasing
One of the most common (and entertaining) dog behaviours, tail chasing is usually harmless. It often signals excess energy, boredom, or playfulness. However, persistent or obsessive tail chasing could indicate anxiety or even a medical issue.
What to do: Increase your dog's mental stimulation with toys or training. If it becomes frequent, consult your vet or a behaviourist.
2. Digging
Dogs dig for various reasons, instinct, boredom, or to find a cool spot to lie down. Terriers and other earth loving breeds are especially prone to digging.
What to do: Give them a designated digging area or sandbox. Ensure they’re getting enough exercise and stimulation.
3. Zoomies
Those sudden bursts of energy where your dog runs madly around the garden or house are known as "zoomies". They’re common in puppies and young dogs, and they’re a completely normal way to release energy.
What to do: Allow safe zoomie time and ensure your dog is well exercised to reduce pent up energy.
4. Barking at Nothing
To us, it may seem like they're barking at nothing, but dogs have far sharper hearing and smell than humans. Your dog could be reacting to distant sounds, animals, or subtle changes in the environment.
What to do: Avoid shouting. Instead, calmly redirect their attention with a cue like “quiet” or offer a toy.
5. Licking Everything
Licking is a way for dogs to communicate, soothe themselves, and explore their world. They may lick you for affection or to taste salty skin. However, obsessive licking may point to anxiety, boredom, or even allergies.
What to do: If the licking is constant or focused on one area, speak to your vet to rule out any underlying issues.
6. Sniffing Other Dogs’ Bottoms
This may look odd, but it’s the canine equivalent of shaking hands. Dogs learn about each other through scent, including age, health, and mood, thanks to glands located near the rear.
What to do: Let it happen, provided both dogs are comfortable and calm.
7. Leaning on You or Sitting on Your Feet
This behaviour is a sign of affection and trust. Dogs often lean on the people they feel safest with. It can also be a way of seeking attention or comfort.
What to do: Enjoy the moment, your dog is bonding with you.
8. Rolling in Smelly Things
Dogs sometimes roll in strong or unpleasant smells to disguise their scent, a leftover instinct from their hunting ancestors. While natural, it’s not so pleasant for us!
What to do: Use a “leave it” command on walks and keep dog safe grooming wipes handy for quick clean-ups.
9. Head Tilting
That adorable head tilt isn’t just cute, it helps dogs better understand sounds, especially when you're speaking. It shows they’re engaged and trying to interpret what you’re saying.
What to do: Keep communicating. It’s a sign your dog is listening and connecting with you.
10. Howling
Dogs howl for a variety of reasons: to communicate, join in with sounds (like sirens), or express distress when alone. It’s a natural vocalisation, especially in breeds like Huskies or Beagles.
What to do: Occasional howling is fine, but if it’s linked to separation anxiety, gradual training or a professional dog trainer may help. We previously puclished an article on Seperation Anxiety here that migh help.
Final thoughts
Understanding why dogs behave the way they do helps you become a more confident, connected, and compassionate dog owner. Most behaviours, even the strange ones, are rooted in instinct or emotion. The more we learn to speak their language, the better we can support their wellbeing and create a calm, happy home.
